In this article, we’re talking about how to find freelancing client from Facebook groups today. So I have found clients through Facebook groups I’ve actually found some fantastic ones, and I’ve maybe even I don’t know what the record says.
So I’ve got a few tips for you:
Joining other groups
First, let’s talk about joining other groups this is probably the easiest way to in the quickest way to find clients. Starting your own Facebook group is valuable we’ll talk about that in a second, but it definitely is a slow crawl so the first thing that I think a lot of us often forget about when it comes to this is optimizing our own Facebook profiles. I know Facebook for me is like the place where I keep in touch with my family and like friends from high school and that’s pretty much it keeps up to date with stuff in my community I don’t really do a lot of business networking, I don’t add clients it doesn’t really do a lot for me personally, and I know that I’m not the only one.
Create a Facebook Business Profile
However, if you’re going to be joining Facebook groups with your own personal profile which I do recommend I don’t recommend joining with a page necessarily and most groups don’t even let you join with your Facebook page so if you are joining with your personal profile it is important that it is optimized somewhat for business so here are the things that you can update.
Create a Facebook Professional Profile Photo
you can update obviously your profile picture that’s going to be showing to anybody who sees you on Facebook, so you know I don’t want like a photo of me drinking a beer, or you know I don’t drink, but you know if doing something like really unprofessional or just not on brand. I don’t know, I just want a profile picture that’s gonna show that I’m a business owner obviously you don’t have to be like in a suit and tie uh like you might be on LinkedIn because it is a personal profile, but you still want it to some somewhat you know speak to your brand.
Create a professional Facebook Cover Photo
If you will something for your cover photo on your personal page those are public as well. So I’ve seen some people use these really creatively and maybe create a professional Facebook Cover Photo that has their business logo and website and a little bit about them and what they offer, or again you can totally do something that’s personal pictures of you know your family or whatever your brand is about as long as it is professional.
Facebook Professional Intro and Customization
It’s not like you being like you know all over the place right also your intro section, so this is the section that has I think it’s like your job experience your education your relationship status all of that stuff you can customize in there what is going to be public and what is going to be friends only and so definitely like put your business on there if you have a Facebook page for your business make sure that that is showing because we’ll talk about this in a second the Facebook group sell or pitch is not always quite so out there sometimes you gotta kind of hope that people can put together the pieces I’ll explain in a second but make sure that you have that showing and then also you know you might want to have your relationship status to friends only. If you don’t want people to like to track down your spouse or whatever the case is you know you can tweak that stuff.
So then you are going to want to join some groups
So I’m going to read out what Alex shared with me there are two in here that I’m a part of and that I always recommend and then there are two new ones.
I’ll talk about the two that I already know about first is freelancing females and this has over 50 000 members so of course, it is you know for females or female-identifying people only unfortunately sorry fellas, but this is a really great
community for education and also for sharing different opportunities. Alex writes it’s an awesome community but a little strict with what you can post the posts get approved before they go live, and you can’t post jobs in the group, but they did create a separate site where they post all of their jobs which is freelancing females.com jobs, so that’s good to know. So yeah they are a little bit strict you have to put like an opportunity if you’re gonna offer something or question or things like that, but I personally like the strictness because it keeps a lot of this spam.
Out the other one that I always recommend to people are called societygal a community for creative female entrepreneurs of 32 000 plus here’s what Alex says she says the community here is excellent I think I even heard you mention it before yep it’s a huge mix of women who work in different jobs there are good amounts of job opportunities as well. So one thing about this group that I’ve noticed is that it is like a very lack there are not a lot of rules in it, I’m going to talk about rules in a second but because of that there can be some spam in there so again keep that in mind, but it’s a pro and con because you can also kind of post whatever you want in there.
Virtual Assistant Savvies
Now Alex also shared two other groups that are specifically related to gig searching or job searching there’s virtual assistant savvies which has over 58 000 people in its an amazing place for social media managers, writers, graphic designers.
Women helping women entrepreneurs
Women helping women entrepreneurs this one’s huge 452k it’s a massive community with a bunch of different jobs posted, and I will link all of those groups down below, so again thank you, Alex, for sharing those.
Group Joining Rules
Now let’s get into the rules this is kind of my first or my second tip for joining these groups is whenever you join these groups make sure that you read through the rules really thoroughly because as I mentioned in these group descriptions different groups have different rules some groups will allow you to post whatever you want. Whenever you want some groups will allow you to share links some will not some have certain days when you can share stuff that you’re working on share opportunities some have different job boards like the freelancing females one where you need to submit jobs so make sure to read through those thoroughly because you don’t want to just start spamming, and you definitely don’t want to do that unknowingly you know you don’t want to break the rules without knowing it and get a bad reputation. So read those very thoroughly and then what you can do because a lot of these groups do have certain sharing days and things like that, so maybe Monday is a sharing day on one of these groups just put a calendar reminder on your Google calendar or Apple calendar or your phone or whatever and just say okay at noon I’m gonna check in on the societygal group I’m just making this up.
The next tip once you find those conversations and this is when you do the search but also when you’re in the sharing threads, or you’re just in day-to-day conversation whatever help people don’t sell to people, and you know what that is like my mantra for life anyway that is how I sell. I don’t do like cold hard pitches for people i genuinely just want to help people and that’s my sales strategy really and truly, so it’s definitely true in Facebook groups were like I said it can be very noisy things can also get very competitive. We’ll talk about rising a kind of to the top of the pack in a second but one of the ways that you can also do that is just by being helpful. I remember one time I was asking what do you look for in an accountant I wasn’t asking for an accountant I was asking like where do you find them and what do you look for, and I just got spammed with links, and I was like okay great like I see your website, but I don’t know why you’re better for me than anybody else and that was my original question.
It was how do I know that I’m finding the right person that was a really great opportunity for somebody to really help serve and demonstrate value and I guarantee you the first person who said these are the five things that you should look for. By the way here’s my link or whatever or let me know if you have any other questions I am an accountant, and I’m happy to answer your questions for you, I would have probably hired them, but nobody did that everybody just spammed their links and I got turned off by it and I found other ways to figure those answers out, so you really want to be helpful in your responses and that’s generally how my responses will go if somebody’s like hey I’m looking to hire a social media manager, where should I look or what should I know about hiring them. I’ll give them a couple of good solid tips that are going to help them whether they work with me or not I’ll say hey Jalal I’m a freelance social media manager. I’m happy to answer those questions here’s answer one here’s answer two and if you have any other additional questions feel free to send me a dm I’m happy to chat about that kind of thing, so that’s how I like to answer those questions and help people out is just by helping people out.
How to avoid Facebook group spam?
I also think it’s important to just mind your manners in these groups. One of the things that help me avoid feeling like a spam bot is by asking for dm I have a lot of content on this my website right I have answers to a lot of people’s questions somewhere in these few hundred articles, so I’m often referring to them when I’m helping people when they come to me ndm’s or whatever but in a Facebook group I’m not just gonna post my blog link because it seems like I’m just trying to get views so if somebody’s like hey I’m looking to do a video podcast what equipment do I need? Well, I have a video on that but instead of just sharing that link I’m gonna say hey Amanda awesome that you’re looking to put your podcast on YouTube here’s a couple of things that I use. I might give like a little teaser like I use this microphone or blah blah blah I use this editing software, I actually have a full video detailing my setup if you’d like to see it feel free to send me a dm or let me know if it’s okay.
If I send you a dm with the link I’m happy to share it with you that way you’re giving people the option to kind of opt-in, and you know you could replace the video thing with anything else maybe it’s a freebie that you have to offer maybe it’s a free consultation that you have maybe it’s your discovery call link and if it really is relevant just ask you know they can ignore you they can choose to take you up on it, and it also gives you a heads-up because here’s the thing about Facebook is if somebody dm’s you who you’re not connected with like you’re not friends with it will often send it to this other folder it’s called message requests I think so if somebody says oh yeah I just dm’d you. I’d love the link that gives you a heads-up to check your message requests folder and on the other side if they say yes please send it to me, I’ll say great just sent you to the dm just FYI it might be coming to your message requests folder so be sure to check that, so that’s what I like to do about the whole dm situation now what about when you’re replying to a direct hiring request.
